EGYPTIAN ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

2002 MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

TO EVERYONE, THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR HORSES

NOTE: This newsletter and future ones are ONLY being sent to members and other interested people. If you know of someone who should or would like to receive a newsletter please contact us

We are now at the end of our fifth year, and the Egyptian Association is continuing to move along. We had another successful Directory, and we received a great many compliments on it. These directories were distributed at the Egyptian Event, the Regionals in Eastern and Western Canada, the Canadian and the US Nationals as well as at a number of Arabian shows in Eastern and Western Canada, especially in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. A large thanks goes out to all those who helped distribute them to the various events. The Directory is a great way to let people know that we have some great Egyptian horses in Canada. Due to illness, our clinic with Hanzi-Heck had to be cancelled, but we were extremely fortunate that Peter Cameron was available to provide one fantastic clinic. This clinic was held at Les Wagschals' Shalom Farm Arabians Inc., and was on English, Western, halter and other great judging suggestions. A special thanks goes out to Peter for this great clinic. This clinic was video taped, and is available for the $10 fee.

In the fall Lynn Cassel-Caldwell gave us a photography clinic at Gary Yaghdjian Pickering Horse Centre. This clinic allowed the members to see the work and effort needed to get some good photos of your horses. Unfortunately, something went wrong with our video camera and the tape, and we were unable to obtain any good taping of this clinic.

We have had a number of good suggestions for future clinics, and we appreciate these very much. If you have any suggestions, PLEASE tell us about them. A large thanks goes out to those members who have had clinics at their farms, and also to those who have volunteered their places to hold future clinics. If you have suggestions as to topics, people to provide clinics, or places to hold future clinics please tell us.

The executive would like to wish everyone and their horses, cats and dogs a joyous Christmas and the very best in the New Year. May Peace and Goodwill be with you throughout the upcoming year.

Directors-at-Large

Due to the large area of Canada and the fact that our members are spread out from coast to coast, the association has asked several Egyptian owners to become Directors-at-Large. These members are chosen from across Canada, and will assist in helping getting our message out to their areas, as well as providing a local representative for present and future members.

Canadian Egyptian Arabian Horse Reference Handbook

There have been suggestions that our association should create an Egyptian horse handbook for Canadian Egyptian horses, similar to the one put out by the Pyramid Society. What do think of this idea? Should we look into this as to costs etc? Please write or phone us your opinion and ideas. Call Heather Pearson at 613-735-1831.

Special Note: The Association will help anyone design and get camera ready their ad for the Directory at no extra costs. Please call Heather or Glenn Pearson for further details.

DIRECTORY 2003

Another directory of members, their farms and their horses is planned this year. We are planning to have it ready to distribute at the Egyptian Event in Kentucky in June, as well as at Regionals and National Arabian shows this year. All ads must be camera ready, plus an original photo (colour or B/W) must accompany all ads if there is to be a picture in the ad. All ads must have accompanying payment. This directory is not only a great inexpensive way to advertise your horses, farm and breeding program, but helps the association to let everyone know that we are here and that we have great horses in this huge country of the Maple Leaf.

The Directory will be 5.5 by 8.5 inches of very high quality paper and cover. It will be a Black & White Directory. Call Heather Pearson if you have any questions.

Advertising Rates and Rules - must be camera ready and with original photo

- Cheques must accompany all ads.

- Members - Full page ads $75.00

- Non-members can advertise at a special offer of $120.00 per page - If you wish to join, the membership fee is $50.00 for the year 2001, then it is only $75.00 per page

- Only Egyptian Arabians can be advertised

- Ads must NOT be folded and are to be sent to Heather Pearson before March 31st 2002 - if any questions or problems call Heather at 613-735-1831 right away.

-Other Commercial business ads (i.e. Grain Co., Insurance Co, Saddle Stores etc.) can place an ad for $100.

- Back inside cover $90 - members only

- Outside back cover $100 - members only

Breeding Offer to Members

Eric and Arlene Lehmann of Cherry Hill Arabians have offered a 10% reduction in stud fees to any member of our Egyptian Association. If you are interested please contact Eric or Arlene directly. If any other association member would like to offer similar or other benefits to members please contact us and we will put it in our next newsletter.

In Memory of J. Leslie Wagschal

Vice-President of the Egyptian Arabian Horse Association of Canada since 1998

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of J. Leslie Wagshcal on October 22nd 2002 in his 61st year, a great horseman and dedicated friend of the beautiful Arabian horse.

Les immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1963 from his home in Switzerland. He was familiar with Arabians and in 1968 he answered an ad that would change his life. The ad was for a two year old grey Egyptian bred stallion named ASF Azrikam, who lived for 29 years and accomplished many disciplines. It was the start of his Arabian dream combined with dressage events.

In 1975, Les and Marny purchased the rolling Aurora land just north of Toronto and Shalom Farm Arabians Inc. was founded. In November of 1976, their daughter Zipporah was born, and the family shared many horse adventures together over the years.

Les travelled to Om El Arab in Germany and purchased two Straight Egyptian mares - *Shalom Ha-Yonah (*Meyhar X *Bint Rawya) and *Shalom Ilanit (Shaker el Masri X Bassima). In 1978, he and Marny purchased *Ibn Amoura (Ibn Abla X Amoura I), a straight Egyptian 3yr. old black bay stallion that came from Egypt.

Shalom Farm Arabians Inc. also had the famous dressage horse, Shalom Mishkoh +//, a grey Anglo-Arab gelding that Les bred, raised and trained to win National Championships in every dressage level and multiple Show Hack championships.

In 1985, Les founded CADENNCE, the only Arabian Horse dressage club associated with the International Arabian Horse Assoc. Horses and clients came to Les's facility for training from all over the world. Les was an international known clinician, who gave seminars and clinics all over the world.

Les was a horseman who loved his Arabians and was dedicated to preserving straight Egyptian blood, as well as proving that the Arabian horse can be pretty as well as being athletic and they could excel as a Sport Horse.

Les will be sadly missed by the Egyptian Arabian Horse Association of Canada, as well as by many others in the Arabian horse world. Canada has lost a great and dedicated Arabian trainer.

Our sympathy goes out to his wife Marny and his daughter Zipporah.
